Functional Trainers

24 products

A functional trainer is one of the most versatile pieces of strength equipment you can add to a gym. Two independently adjustable cable arms let you work through any angle - from floor to overhead - allowing you to train virtually every major muscle group from a single station.

Unlike a lat pulldown or cable crossover designed around a limited range of movements, a functional trainer opens up hundreds of exercise options across strength training, rehabilitation and conditioning.

Since 2009, Little Bloke Fitness has supplied Australian home gyms and commercial facilities with functional trainers built for long-term use. Our range spans compact units through to full dual-cable rack systems in both home and commercial configurations.

    Why choose a functional trainer?

Functional trainers use a weight stack and pulley system to deliver constant cable tension through a full range of motion. That constant tension makes them particularly effective for isolation work, unilateral training, and movements where free weights may provide less resistance at certain points of the exercise.

The ability to adjust cable height and work from multiple angles makes a functional trainer one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in a gym. They can be used for pressing and pulling movements, rotational strength work, core training, shoulder mobility and rehabilitation exercises, and sport-specific movement patterns.

Our range includes compact home gym models, rack-integrated cable systems and heavy-duty commercial functional trainers, allowing you to choose a configuration that suits your available space, training style and budget.

    Functional trainer FAQs

A cable crossover has the same two pulley stations, but set further apart than a functional trainer. While perfect for chest flies and cable crossover movements, it can limit the number of other possible dual cable movements. A functional trainer typically has two adjustable cable columns that can be set from floor level to overhead, allowing far more exercise variety across multiple planes of motion. Some units offer both configurations.

Weight stack requirements depend on the exercises you're performing and the strength levels of the people using the machine. Our range includes different stack sizes across models - contact our team to discuss what suits your training setup.

A well-specified functional trainer can effectively cover the function of a separate lat pulldown machine, cable crossover, and low pulley row station from a single footprint. Larger facilities often run functional trainers alongside dedicated single-function machines to accommodate multiple users simultaneously. The right setup depends on your space, user volume, and training requirements.

Rack-mounted cable systems deliver the same cable tension and exercise versatility as freestanding units, with the added option of integrating with your existing power rack or rig, or building bespoke solutions using modular components, like the 1RM range. Whether rack-mounted or standalone suits you better depends on your existing equipment and floor plan - our team can talk you through both options.

In many cases, yes. A functional trainer can be used for a wide range of upper body, lower body and core exercises from a single station. The right setup depends on your training goals and whether you prefer cable training, free weights or a combination of both.
