Change & Fractional plates

5 products

Change plates - often called fractional plates or micro plates - are small Olympic weight plates designed to allow you to add very small increases in your barbell weight. Instead of jumping 2.5 kg or 5 kg at a time, fractional plates let lifters add weight in much smaller increments, typically between 0.25 kg and 2.5 kg. These small increases allow lifters to add minimal weight to the bar - essential for breaking plateaus, refining technique under progressive load, and programming precise percentage-based training.

Fractional plates are also commonly used in percentage-based strength programs, where precise loading helps maintain accurate training intensity.

Little Bloke Fitness has supplied strength equipment to Australian gyms and lifters since 2009. Our change and fractional plates are designed to provide accurate micro-loading for lifters who want consistent long-term progression.

If you're unsure which fractional plate set is right for your training setup, our team can help.

Why Use Change and Fractional Plates?

Change plates - also known as fractional plates - allow lifters to add very small amounts of weight to the bar.

Instead of increasing weight in large jumps, fractional plates make it possible to progress in smaller steps. This becomes especially useful on lifts where progressive overload is important, but a 2.5 kg increase can be too much.

Micro-loading also works well in percentage-based training programs, where precise weight adjustments help maintain the intended training intensity.

    Perfect for:

    • Breaking through strength plateaus with smaller jumps

    • Percentage-based programming (e.g. 82.5% of 1RM)

    • Refining technique under progressive load

    • Upper body lifts where 2.5kg jumps are too large

    • Powerlifting and Olympic lifting competition preparation

Our change and fractional plate options include calibrated steel plates with ±10 gram tolerance, rubber-coated change plates for grip and floor protection, and technique plates for learning Olympic lift positions with minimal load.

Features of Our Change and Fractional Plates

Our change and fractional plates are designed to provide precise loading options for a wide range of strength training environments.

    Key Features include:

    • Weight options: 0.25kg, 0.5kg, 1kg, 1.25kg, 1.5kg, 2.0kg and 2.5kg

    • Calibrated steel options with ±10 gram tolerance

    • Rubber-coated options for grip and protection

    • Technique plates (2.5kg-5kg) at full 450mm diameter for proper bar height

    • 50mm centre bore for Olympic barbells

    • Clear weight markings

    • Sold individually or in sets

Technique plates allow lifters to practice Olympic lifts with correct bar height while keeping the load light. Fractional plates then allow gradual increases as technique and strength improve.

    Change and Fractional Plate FAQs

Fractional plates become useful when normal weight increases feel too large. They allow smaller increases so you can continue progressing even when strength gains slow down.

Change plates (0.25-2.5kg) are small-diameter plates for micro-loading. Technique plates (2.5-5kg) are full 450mm diameter to maintain proper bar height for learning Olympic lifts with lighter loads.

For general training, standard fractional plates work fine. For competition preparation or precise percentage programming, calibrated plates with ±10 gram tolerance ensure exact loading.

Smaller increments allow you to progress when 2.5kg jumps stall. Adding 0.5-1kg per session maintains momentum and builds confidence under manageable loads.
