Dumbbells are one of the most fundamental, iconic and popular pieces of weight training equipment and can be found in most commercial and home gyms. There are two main types of dumbbell: adjustable dumbbells, where the amount of weight can be adjusted by removing or adding weight plates to them, and fixed weight dumbbells.
Adjustable dumbbell handles are small metal bars (often referred to as dumbbell handles) that allow multiple weight plates to be slotted onto each end and secured by a collar to ensure they don’t slip off during use. Adjustable dumbbells are most commonly found in home gyms where space is limited and practicality is important, as they effectively offer multiple combinations of weights in one single package. The downside to this style of dumbbell is that a degree of effort is required to change weights between sets of different exercises and they are limited in terms of the amount of weight that can be loaded onto them.
As is the case with barbells, dumbbells can also come in two diameter specifications: Standard (usually 25-28mm thick) and Olympic (50mm thick). Standard diameter dumbbells are the most common variant as they are considerably cheaper and more widely available.
With standard dumbbells, the weight shaft thickness varies from 25mm through to 28mm, with different collar styles and lengths available. Better priced than olympic sized equipment, they will suit most everyday lifters.
Olympic dumbbells have a much thicker end than standard barbells. They typically will have a rotating end, weigh more and tend to be sturdier than a standard sized dumbbell. Subsequently – they generally cost more. With the extra strength, these bars are more suited to the serious lifters.

We offer a number of pre-packaged dumbbell kits , varying from 20kg in weight through to 100kg. These packages are offered with our EZ lift weight plates.
Fixed dumbbells come with a fixed handle and weight, so no changes to the weight configurations are possible. These are more commonly found in professional gyms where accurate weight ranges are required. The benefit of having a complete range of fixed dumbbells is that no adjustment is required between sets – you can simply move to the next weight range. Fixed dumbbells are also stronger and sturdier than their adjustable counterparts which make them more stable when using heavier weight.
While we stock Rubber Hex Dumbbells as our fixed dumbbell of choice, we are able to provide a variety of different fixed dumbbells, including commercial dumbbells, neoprene dumbbells, vinyl dumbbells and other variations.
