There are two main sizes of barbells (size referring to the thickness of the barbell rather than its length – there are many different lengths).
Standard sized barbells are more common than Olympic sized barbells. The thickness of standard bars varies from 25mm through to 28mm, with different collar styles available as well. Better priced than olympic sized equipment, they will suit most everyday lifters.

Olympic sized barbells have a much thicker shaft than standard barbells. They typically will have a rotating end, weigh more and tend to be sturdier than a standard sized barbell. Subsequently – they generally cost more. With the extra strength, these bars are more suited to the serious lifters.
